The Price of Money - Book Summary and Review

Money is something that we need, we look for and for some people it's their ultimate goal. For me personally, money is interesting. It's a thing that we need to understand.  I think I should learn about money since I was much younger but it's never too late to start something. It's better now than never. I start to read book about money including The Price of Money. It's basically the 5W 1H (What, Why, When, Where, Who and How) about money which I find informative and useful for me.

Book Summary:

- Money is something we use to pay for goods and services using its physical representation as notes and coins or increasingly their digital equivalents.
- Money doesn't need to have a value in its own rights
- If enough people within an economy can agree that something represents money, then that's what it is.  But some things work better as money than others (gold vs leaves)
- Modern currencies don't have a fixed value
- When you look at prices in gold rather than pounds or dollars, they've either stayed the same or declined rather than increased.  House prices have become more expensive in money (dollar, pounds) but not in gold. Food cost have fallen dramatically when measured in gold.
- Money's "buying power" has dramatically and consistently decreased over the last 150-1200 years.

- Inflation is a persistent substantial rise in the general level of prices related to an increase in the volume of money and resulting in the loss of value of currency
- Inflation is good for people who are in debt and potentially bad for everyone else
- Governments want inflation because it's better than deflation and it makes it easire to manage their own debts
- Long term generalized inflation results from the amount of money in the economy increasing faster than the amount of goods and services you can buy with it
- Whenever the people in control of money (king, governments, etc) have had the opportunity to devalue it for their own gain, they've tended to take it
- The gold standard allowed countries to trade with one another easily by fixing their individual currencies to gold.  However, constraint on the money supply (convertibility into gold) always get abandoned during times in trouble (war, pandemic).

- Central banks oversee the creation of all money in the economy
- Central banks influence the amount of money creation by setting the price of lending via base rate.
- Money is created when a loan is made by commercial bank, and this is where the most money in economy comes from.

- In theory, lower interest rates lead to more borrowing. But psychology is an important factor, people will over-borrow when they're confident even if it's expensive, and will reluctant to borrow at any price when they're fearful
- Borrowing by individuals is massively important in the money-creation story since banks create money to lend it. Majority (by volume), company borrowing isn't from bank hence it's only a minor part of money creation.
- Governments borrow to raise money for the many activities they undertake - either because they can't raise enough money from taxation or because they don't want to
- When the cost of government borrowing rises, interest payments will be higher, and the accumulated debt could become a serious problem

- Quantitative Easing (QE) is economist-speak for 'creating money' intended to generate consumer spending.
- Government used QE to avoid crisis

- How to make the most of your money
1. Forget about growing your wealth with savings
2. Take on debt (responsibly)
3. Be wary of fixed-income investments
4. Invest in real assets (commodities, property, infrastructure)
5. Invest in stock market boringly

How to be thriving financially, whatever the economic weather:
- Don't rely on government
- Follow events, not narratives
- Think real, not nominal
- Take control, or diversify
- Understand that no one understands
- Expect the unexpected
- Understand your value

The Infinite Game - Book Summary and Review

One of the reasons I bought this book was because of the title, Infinite Game. It relates to my thinking as corporate workers.  Company should last as long as they able to, 100 years, 200 years hence it's Infinite Game. It's not like tennis game or monopoly that will end after reached certain condition. Our life is finite, but corporation should be infinite.

Book Summary:

  • Infinite game has infinite time horizons, and because there is no finish line, no practical end to the game, there is no such thing as "winning" an infinite game. In an infinite game, the primary objective is to keep playing, to perpetuate the game.
  • The true value of an organization's is measured by the desire others have to contribute to that organization's ability to keep succeeding, not just during the time they are there, but well beyond their own tenure.
  • A Just Cause is a specific vision of a future sate that does not yet exist, and it must be For Something, Inclusive, Service Oriented, Resilient, Idealistic. A written Just Cause works like a compass, you have to had one.
  • The responsibility of business is to use its will dan resources to advance a cause greater than itself, protect the people and places in which it operates and generate more resources so that it can continue doing all those things for as long as possible. An organization can do whatever it likes to build its business so long as it is responsible for the consequences of its actions.
  • Resources are limited, but will can be generated endlessly (will is generated by company culture). For this reason, organizations that choose to operate with a bias for will are ultimately more resilient than those who prioritize resources.
  • Leaders need to training leaders who can create an environment in which everyone feels trusted and trusting so that they can work together to overcome any obstacle.
  • Leaders are not responsible for the results; leaders are responsible for the people who are responsible for the results. And the best way to drive performance in an organization is to create an environment in which information can flow freely, mistakes can be highlighted, and help can be offered and received.
  • Ethical fading is engaging is unethical behavior while believing that we are still acting in line with our own moral or ethical code. It's a failure of leadership and is a controllable element in a corporate culture.  Infinite-minded leaders accept that creating a culture that is more resistant to ethical fading requires patience and hard work. It requires devotion to a Cause, a bias for will before resources and the ability to nurture Trusting Teams.
  • Worthy Rivals can help us get better at What we do, get clearer on Why we do it and the best way to help us improve and adapt before it's too late. Without Worthy Rival we risk losing our humility and out agility.
  • Existential Flexibility is the capacity to initiate an extreme disruption to a business model or strategic course in order to more effectively advance a Just Cause. Existential Flexibility is always offensive and recreate passion for something new at the time when the company is already enjoying success.
  • The Courage to Lead is a willingness to take risks for the good of an unknown future.
  • The courage to see the Infinite Game-to see the purpose of business as something more heroic than simply making money, even if it's unpopular with the finite players around us-is hard.
  • Integrity does not just mean "doing the right thing". Integrity means acting before the public outcry or scandal.
  • Playing the Infinite Gane is not a checklist, it's a mindset.
  • The hard decisions were not made by great women and great men. They are done by great partnership. Great teams. Great people who stood together with deep trust and common cause.
There are a lot of interesting real-life stories in the book that will make you understand what you need to have and to do in the infinite game. Again, perfect book for your weekend.

Diamond is a Girl's Best Friend (?)

Jadi apakah Diamond is a Girl's Best Friend? Only you can answer it 😊.

My Skin Care Recommendation

Let's talk about skin care. Something that girl needs every time, day and night.

My skin type is dry and sensitive. Not a good combination but it is what it is, I can't change it and just have to live with it. Quite struggling with my skin care for a long long time until one of my friends advise me to try Bioderma.  Since I tried Bioderma, my skin condition is getting better and better. Until now I still use Bioderma.  I use Bioderma cleanser, toner, serum in the morning and night and for moisturizer only during the day. So far so good, no complaint about it. Usually, I buy Bioderma at authorized online store in Tokopedia or Shopee, especially when they are in discount, it's a lot of cheaper compared to offline store.

Well, aging is something that we can't avoid. For some reasons I didn't go to skin care clinic to get treatment that can make you looks younger. Then I try L'occitane, and some how it's suitable for my skin. I use the Immortelle Divine series. Yes, it's quite pricey, but I think it's worth it.  I use it at night before bed. The eye cream, I use it in the morning also.

For sunscreen, after trying some brands, currently I use Bioderma sunscreen, so far ok, no greasy and very suitable for my skin. If you have any acne, my savior is The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil, never failed on me. For lip balm, for me the best is Vaseline Lip Care. I try other more expensive brand for lip care but the best for me is still Vaseline.

Hope this sharing is useful, especially for you who has dry and sensitive skin just like me.
